Egg Carton Flower Wreath

I found this via Pinterest and traced it back to Homemade Serendipity. There credit was given to The Crafty Crow. Clicking over to The Crafty Crow I found the path lead to Krokotak!  :-)

What a refreshingly kid friendly wreath. I love it when my son and I craft together!

1) Gather egg cartons and deconstruct them.
The portion that holds the egg can be turned into various flower shapes.
Some with rounded petals, others fringed.
Use some of the pointed in-between pieces for flower centers.
The flat top and sides of the egg carton make great leaves. 2) Paint the flowers and leaves.  Tempera paint works well.  For the wreath pictured here only 5 colors were used: red, blue, yellow, green and white. Using small jars you can, of course, mix to make purple, oranges, greens, pinks, etc. If you use resealable jars you can practice the frugal, "waste not; want not" philosophy.
Another tip: Simple Mama uses old cookie sheets as painting boards. The side benefit of the cookie sheets is that they hold water spills beautifully.

After our flowers dried a bit you can use a finer brush to add just a bit of detailing.
The base of the wreath is cardboard.  The circle should be painted a basic dark green and allowed to dry.
3) Choose where to place each egg carton flower along the cardboard frame. The flowers, when dry from the paint are a bit stiff so in some cases you may need to manhandled them a bit. Most pieces can simply be moved around until you find what looks right to you.
4) Attach them to the frame with a hot glue gun.
The finished wreath is so cute and colorful!  Because it's made of cardboard and watercolor paint, I don't recommend hanging it outside in the elements. Unless you use a waterproof paint like an oil based paint or acrylic,  it might best to keep it inside where everyone can enjoy it.
